SNAP Photo Festival in Cilgerran Wales by Voyteck Photography

Carly and I had the absolute pleasure of attending and leading workshops at SNAP Photo Festival this past April in Cilgerran, Wales. After a few days in London, exploring the city and hosting our first international {un}convention with Nova Reid of Nu Bride, we hopped in a rental car and made our way to the Welsh country side. The journey itself was a bit of an adventure, as I was driving on the left side of the road for the first time and trying not to crash our car on the tiny winding Welsh country roads, but we made it and the journey was absolutely worth is.

SNAP Photo Festival is a annual conference for photographers and industry supporters led by the amazing Laura Babb. It's like summer camp, a photography conference, and Coachella all rolled into one, and we can't wait to go back.

Here are 10 reasons you need to be at the SNAP Salon in April 2018!

1. The Swag

Okay, swag is pretty important to me when it comes to conferences. What can I say, I love free stuff. When we walked up I was handing a backpack full of the COOLEST SWAG EVER. Stickers, notebook, camera USB, a yoyo, a camping mug, and more. So often you receive swag at conferences that is just MEH, but this swag has every other conference beat. My SNAP backpack is now my regular carryon any time I'm traveling, making it one of my favorite belongings, and my SNAP mug is a regular in my morning coffee rotation. It doesn't get better than this swag.

2. The Venue

The conference was held at FForest in Cilgerran, Wales, a campground/farm venue nestled between a tiny village and a wildlife reserve. Conference attendees got to stay in dome tents or cabins, and the scenery was out of this world. Everything about this place was cozy AF. The bar was in a little stone cottage with a fireplace so you could enjoy a beer as you warmed your bones. Conference talks took place in the main barn, or in a number of other cottages and tents. Fire pits meant fireside chats and roasted marshmallows. Overall, it was perfect. And we were just a short drive away from the Welsh seaside, which produced some gorgeous photos.

While the next SNAP will be held at a new venue, West Lexham, I know that it will be just as wonderful, with its treehouses and glamping.

3. The Talks

I would have gone to SNAP just to hang out and enjoy the venue, but of course the conference talks from industry leaders were amazing and the icing on the cake. We enjoyed every talk we had a chance to attend, from Laura Babb herself, to Jide Assumpção-Alakija, and so many more. I personally learned so much, as I am not a photographer, but being present let me get inside the head of a photographer for a few days and see what matters to them. We discussed topics such as introversion, social media, publication submissions, and various styles of photography.

4. The Cat

Y'all, there was a farm cat. AND SHE WAS AWESOME. That's all I have to say about that.

5. My Joint Workshop with Nova Reid of Nu Bride

After teaming up with Nova for {un}convention in London, we teamed up to lead a joint workshop discussing diversity and inclusion in wedding photography. Nova discussed the importance of representation and how necessary it is for people to see themselves reflected in media, and I focused on how photographers can change their terminology and websites to practically take steps to be more inclusive.

6. Carly's LGBTQ Couples' Photo Shoot

There were tons of great styled shoots at SNAP, but my favorite was the LGBTQ+ inclusive couples shoot led by our co-founder, Carly Romeo. Carly recruited two amazing couples, including Jess and Karolyn of Honey and the Moon Photography and photographer Phil Dignum and his husband, Toby. It was a joy to meet these two couples, and the photos were fantastic!

7. The Food

Every breakfast, lunch, and dinner was DELICIOUS. I could eat the food at this conference EVERY DAY FOREVER.

8. Meeting the Folks at QtAlbums

While at SNAP, we got to meet the folks from QtAlbums, a Polish-based photo album company that creates fine art prints and custom USB drives. QtAlbums is our newest corporate partner, and that's because they create phenomenal products and are super great people. They also brought a lot of booze for everyone, so you know, obviously they are A+ people.

9. The Party

At the end of the conference, SNAP hosted one of the most epic dance parties I have ever seen. Everyone brought their A-game with face paint, colorful wigs, T-rex costumes, rainbow suits, and floral head pieces. We danced, and we danced hard.

10. The People

We met so many awesome humans while we were at SNAP, and some of those humans have become true friends. We are truly gutted that we won't be at SNAP this April, but we are crossing our fingers we'll be back with this crew of colorful creative people soon.
