What is the mission of Mae B. Films?
Anyone can show up and just press record. I aspire to lead with curiosity and discover the story that connects us all to your fascinating journey.
What is Mae B. Films's Origin Story?
8 Years ago I was in my final year of undergrad, dreaming of making a name for myself as a filmmaker, when, surprise! I found out I was pregnant. I, literally, graduated, with my B.A. degree, by the skin of my teeth, only one week after having given birth. My fiancé and I were all alone in NYC, with no extended family and no help. We both decided that it was best that I stayed home with our daughter. She was so worth the sacrifice but my entire professional life was put on hold and I'm not gonna lie, I felt like, in some ways, I had failed. One day, I stumbled across a few cinematic wedding films online and was completely blown away! The flexibility of running my own business was exactly what I needed and best of all I could return to my love of filmmaking!
There was still one elephant sized hurdle, we had only one income and money was tight. We couldn't afford expensive video equipment. It wasn’t until our daughter was two years old that I felt comfortable enough to put her in preschool and I got a small temp job. The job was only set to last three months, but I was so excited because it was a start. Surprisingly, three months turned into 18 months and that was all the time I needed to buy each piece of equipment one item at a time. I hit the ground running after my temp assignment ended and I've never looked back.
As a business, Mae B. Films is young, but it was 8 years in the making. If someone had told me that I’d be a mompreneur, I would’ve never believed it. But funny enough, I'm exactly where I always wanted to be, telling stories with my camera. Kali, my daughter, my heart, was born from my love, and Mae B. Films was born from my dreams.
What is one of your favorite projects you've ever worked on?
I've done some pretty fun creative collaboration with other wedding vendors but one of my all time favorite styled shoots was the "Barbie + Kendra" styled shoot. I love this shoot because it represents everything I stand for as a storyteller, which is being authentic and reshaping the ideas of what it means to tell a wedding story.
How are you a "wedding space disrupter”?
I'm a Black woman, who's a wedding filmmaker. This industry is predominantly cis gendered white males and I'm disrupting the wedding industry by unapologetically adding my voice into the mix! Along with my couples, we collaborate together to capture films that really reflect their journey instead of a template that looks like every other wedding video on the web.
What three ingredients are necessary for a great day at Mae B. Films?
- My favorite Spotify playlist
- A Couple that's in good spirits, loves a good laugh, and is excited to collaborate
- Sneaking in some time with my 8 year-old daughter :)!
What are some traits of your ideal client?
My clients are creative, and really love to customize their entire wedding experience. They understand that we're working together, it's a partnership. I want to work with my couples to craft the most meaningful wedding story for them, as possible. My client love to keep in touch because I'm not the type to bring you on as and then you only meet me for the first time, 12 months later on your wedding day, how could I ever understand the dynamics of your awesome relationship, if I don't actually take the time to get to know you? I'm down to shoot my couples a fun little text message here and there and even meeting up to get to know one another. Many of my clients become extended parts of my family and we keep in touch well after their wedding :)!
I'm Nikki Miller, and I want to do more than just show up on your wedding day and press record. I believe that your love story is more than just a single day’s glimpse. That’s why I’m not interested in cranking out wedding films, like a factory. The idea of creating formulaic films bores me to tears. I want to do more than just show up on your wedding day and mindlessly press record, where’s the creativity in that? I believe in us connecting to craft something lasting. Let's break away from the convention and vow to place the focus on what really matters; creating a testament to who you both are. Let's tell stories with real depth. Let's share something real!
