Amy Sims is a New York-based wedding photographer with over 12 years of experience in the industry. Her work has been featured in a variety of publications, including The New York Times, New York Weddings Magazine, The Knot, Rock N Roll Bride, Love Inc., and Green Wedding Shoes.
Amy was born in San Diego, raised among Colorado’s mountains, and eventually pulled east by New York’s undeniable gravity. Somewhere between the coastlines, she discovered photography—courtesy of her dad’s framed travel photos. They were full of grain and sunlight, candid shots of him grinning through Europe in cities she hadn’t yet seen. It was the first time in her life she felt real magic: being so far away from something, yet feeling completely present in it, all through the power of a simple photograph.
Amy grew up in a theatrical family. Over the years, she took production photos and headshots for actors. After getting married in 2012, she looked into wedding photography. She interned with an established wedding photography studio where she learned the ins and outs of the business, as well as honed her photography skills. She quickly went from intern to second shooter to associate photographer.
In 2015, Amy Sims Photography was founded with a simple idea: that love stories deserve to be remembered the way they actually happened—real and imperfect, multifaceted and luminous. New York is the perfect canvas for that kind of beauty: every brick tells a story, every rooftop holds a memory. When she photographs a wedding, she's not only preserving your story — she's making it part of the city’s heartbeat.
Those who have worked with Amy have described her as “a calming presence throughout what is typically a stressful day”. She’s characterized as someone who takes the time to understand who her clients are and what they’re looking for. Fellow vendors have called her dedicated, creative, and exceptionally talented. People often express that she is professional, warm, and easy to work with.
What is your style?
I describe my style as artfully candid. I love natural and ambient light, but, come nightfall, it’s party time, and I’m on the dance floor with my flash ready to capture those moves. A lot of my clients are self-described introverts or tell me they’re not comfortable in front of the camera. I do my best to put them at ease, so they feel comfortable being themselves, and that’s when the candid magic happens. I’ll guide and pose when necessary, but most of the time I’m trying to capture genuine interactions and moments. One of my couples recently described my style as “natural storytelling” in that it “doesn’t just document a wedding—it captures feeling, place, and connection." I’m not after flawlessness; I’m after humanity in all its messy glory. The caught-off-guard laugh, the wind stealing a veil, the look you give each other when no one’s supposed to notice. Those are the moments that really matter, and capturing them is everything to me.
What’s a trend you love?
I love private vows! As I mentioned, I get a lot of introverts and vows are an incredibly vulnerable moment. Why not take a private moment to say all the personal words of devotion you might not otherwise feel comfortable saying in front of all your guests.
What are you passionate about?
Capturing stories authentic to my clients. I love seeing the creative and diverse ways people use their weddings as a form for self-expression. Anytime I hear guests say “this is so them” it makes me smile. My goal is always to artfully tell the story of my clients’ day.
What does community mean to you?
The wedding vendor community in New York is one of my favorite things about my job. There are so many supportive and encouraging people who really show up for one another. Running a small business is hard and isolating. Having a community of people who understand what you’re going through and make an effort to help one another is truly invaluable.
