What is mission of Teresa Johnson Photography?

Let's be super clear: EVERY love story is celebrated equally here. I treat every client with the same warmth, compassion, love and friendship. My goal is to tell love stories that are completely real: we're going to be 100% authentic. In order to do that, we're going to spend time talking (and laughing!) together. I'm going to serve as a resource for ALLLL the wedding questions...and I'm going to be here to help whenever you need me. This business has been built on genuine affection for all of my clients, on respect, and on trust. The experience you have here will help us create the photos that will tell your story for decades to come.

What is Teresa Johnson Photography's origin story?

In 2010, I was working full-time in public relations for a non-profit organization in the sport of archery. We had no money to hire a photographer, but we were sending athletes to Olympic Trials and World Cups and it was obvious that we needed to do a better job of telling our story. With the camera that my husband and I gave each other as a Christmas gift, I started taking photos — and became completely obsessed with photography. Four years later, two of my closest friends asked me to capture their wedding. It was an incredible day of uniting two beautiful women and families from two different continents. At the end of the day, I'd never worked harder, but felt like I'd found my calling. I hustled hard, worked full time while photographing weddings for four years, and in 2018, left my job to become a full-time wedding photographer. I have never been happier, and I've never looked back.

What is one of your favorite projects you've ever worked on?

It's so difficult to choose a favorite project, because I have genuinely enjoyed every single wedding I've photographed over the past four years! Choosing a favorite would be a bit like asking me to choose my favorite cat (I have four...I digress 🐈). But the weddings that are closest to my heart are those celebrations that are truly personal. The past four and a half years (!) have been a tapestry of traditions - new and ancient, cultural and pop-cultural, secular and religious - that have allowed me to look at the world through a completely different lens. So whether it's two beautiful brides getting married in an aquarium, a Palestinian wedding with 400 guests, a a Soul Train line, or a Persian knife dance, I am down for ALL OF IT.

How are you a "wedding space disrupter”?

Our industry is still too homogenized, and I believe that *true* disruption is about challenging perceptions. As photographers, our responsibility is twofold: first, to ensure that every potential client can see themselves in our past work, and know that we celebrate ALL love stories. Second, we have an incredible opportunity to make an impact by allowing people to (literally) see another person, culture, religion, whatever — through a different lens. This is particularly true of wedding photography. Pictures are POWERFUL: we have the chance to tell stories that spread love, inspire compassion, and speak to the beauty of diversity.

What three ingredients are necessary for a great day at Teresa Johnson Photography?

Respect. Kindness. Humor.

What are some traits of your ideal client?

My ideal clients are people (and sometimes their pets). Seriously. Every person has a story to tell, and in order to document those stories, I fall a little bit in love with every single client. I'm curious about where you came from. I'm interested in your story. I want to know what makes you laugh, who's most important to you, how and why you and your partner chose one another. THAT is the story I want to tell. So if you're quiet but fierce about that love, I'll document it. And if you scream it from the rooftops, I'll capture it. And if love means just walking and talking and laughing, that's perfect, too. So — YOU are my ideal client, because you are uniquely beautiful, and you have a story to tell.
