Martin Luther King, Jr. Tribute Photo Session

Martin Luther King, Jr. Tribute Photo Session

As a high school senior photographer for guys in Houston and mom to a handsome little guy, it is my goal to encourage and support young men near and far through my imagery. As the late Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.” I have the same dream that my children and the young people that I photograph can live out their days judged by their character and not by the color of their skin.

The Queen Photographers // Photo of the Week: Stuck in Time

The Queen Photographers // Photo of the Week: Stuck in Time

This image reminds me of my childhood, growing up on Liberty Hill in Charleston, South Carolina. We lived walking distance from this classic train station, and it was our playground. Yes, we played on the tracks (we didn't know any better). We would put pennies on the tracks to watch the trains flattened them as they rolled by. We would also go inside the station just to make the security guard mad by playing with the payphone and running around—you know, just being a kid. The guard would say, "Stop it! I'm calling the police!", but he never did. I never noticed the Charleston sign until years later. It was a must that I capture that sign. So, I went to the station and asked if I could get some shots, and to my surprise, the inside still looked the same! I felt like I went back in time; if that old security guard was still there, I would have passed out! I presented a huge canvas of this image to my sister on her 54th birthday, and the tears started because she remembered.

Woke Wednesday // Meet Cassandra Zetta, an LGBTQ+ Wedding Photographer in Cincinnati

Woke Wednesday // Meet Cassandra Zetta, an LGBTQ+ Wedding Photographer in Cincinnati

Cassandra: June 2012 was momentous for me personally, as I got married and officially started my business in that same month. Planning a same-sex wedding prior to marriage equality, while it was mostly wonderful for us, still stirred up emotions that should never be associated with such an exciting experience. We dealt with anxiety, nervousness, and worry about how vendors would treat us. With every email sent, the question "Are you comfortable working with a same-sex couple?" was included so that there weren't any uncomfortable surprises later. A bit of our joy was stolen from us simple because of who we were. For these reasons, I realized it was imperative to effect change in the wedding industry, and I knew I could make a difference with photography. And so, I overhauled my business in the fall of 2013 to refocus on LGBTQ+ weddings and elopements. The work I am doing now fills my heart and soul in a way I never could have imagined possible. Being able to share my passion and mission, while having life experiences that allow for a true understanding of those in the community, while inviting them to love openly and honestly, is a gift that I am honored and privileged to give.

Woke Wednesday // Meet New York Photographer Amy Anaiz

Liz: So what does your business look like today, nine years later?

Amy: Prosperous.

Liz: That's great to hear. And reassuring to all of us who are younger in our businesses.

Amy: I've had opportunities that I never would have imagined nine years ago. I moved here with 2K in my bank account with a hope and a dream. I had no apartment; I slept on my aunt's couch for months, but slowly I've made a way. Nine years later, I live in a brownstone and make enough money to support myself, my family, and then some... So that makes me proud of myself.

Real Families // Courageous Love: Chardee

Real Families // Courageous Love: Chardee

I greatly underestimated the journey to motherhood. I had nine months to change my mentality and to become the woman and mother I have always dreamt I'd be. I've learned more about myself in these past months than I have in my 28 years on earth. I wanted my maternity session to reflect that growth. My journey hasn’t been easy to say the least, but I have and will continue to overcome all obstacles in my way. At the time of my session, I felt confident in my new role of Mommy-to-be. Megan and Garrett were spot-on with a location that would reflect this change. Mansions are beautiful and known to  symbolize wealth. I found beauty in my transition from independent young woman to highly-favored young mother. I have now become rich—rich in knowledge, strength, and unconditional love for another. Like a mansion, the home for me and my daughter, Ava, will be built brick by brick on a solid foundation of faith. I’m so thankful that I have pictures that truly depict the woman I have now become and the mother that I know I will be.
